Turning genes on and off using pulses of light

Optogenetic systems are novel research tools that allow the regulation of neuronal activity. They use engineered photoreceptor proteins that change gene expression upon a light stimulus. These receptors are bound to chromosomes and directly manipulate the genetic function of the targeted cells. This allows rapid manipulation of gene function via chemical reactions.
