Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Zebrafish are small fish which are frequently kept as pets due to their attractive stripes patterns. They share 70% of their DNA with humans.

Danio rerio, or zebrafish, is a popular model organism in biological research. It is chiefly used in studies of vertebrate development and gene function, although its unusual ability to regenerate a large number of its organs, including the heart, is also of major interest.

The zebrafish genome is fully sequenced, and its embryos are transparent, rapidly-developing, and able to develop outside of the mother. A strain of zebrafish have been developed that have transparent skin at the adult stage, allowing detailed visualisation of internal processes.
