Synthetic biology

Synthetic biology is a field of research in which engineering principals are applied to biological components.

Synthetically engineered biological systems can be used to produce synthetic products varying from vaccines and penicillins even compounds like rubber. One application has been the development of cellular chemical ‘factories’ in which the metabolic pathways of simple organisms such as yeast (pictured) and bacteria have been engineered to synthesise a desired product in an analogous way to drug synthesis in an organic chemistry laboratory.
