Optical microscope silhouette

Optical microscopes use visible light and a series of lenses to magnify images. The light used may either be produced by a light bulb or may be reflected into the microscope using a mirror (pictured). Many microscopes have multiple objective lenses, allowing the same area of the sample to be viewed at different magnifications easily.
