Commonly known as human egg cell, an oocyte is a cell that is in the early stages of becoming a fertilisable ovum.

Oocytes are the female gametes and are rich in cytoplasm containing the nutrients for early embryo development. They mature into Graffian Follicles before being released during ovulation. Oocytes are encased in a glycoprotein shell called the zona pellucida that prevents more than one sperm from fertilising the same egg.
