Mouse (Mus musculus)

Mice and rats are the most used lab animals in the world, because of how easy they are to produce, keep and monitor. They share much of their body and brain physiology with humans.

Also, mice share a high degree of their genetic material with humans and are the most commonly used mammalian model organism. Almost all mouse genes in the species Mus musculus have human homologues, making them excellent subjects for knockout studies.
