fruit fly (drosophila melanogaster)

The fruit fly drosophila melanogaster  is found in homes and restaurants as they lay their eggs on fermenting fruits and other organic material. On average they lay 500 eggs at a time and the tiny larvae feed on the fermenting organic material.


Drosophila is a species commonly used in genetics research and developmental biology.are easy to breed and have several characterised mutant stocks that can be crossed together to investigate gene expression and chromosome mapping.
