Cell migration

Migrating cell. Time-lapse illustration of a migrating cell, using outlines to show the previous cell boundaries.

Cell migration is key to metastasis (spread) and the progression of cancer. Metastasis of cancer cells can lead to tumours developing in new places. Cells migrate using focal adhesion points to attach to a surface, and contractions of the cytoskeleton to move the cell towards them.
